Allah sent Prophet Yunus (Jonah, peace be upon him) to the people of the city of Nineveh, calling them to worship Allah alone and to abandon idol worship. But his people stubbornly refused to believe for a long time, and Yunus, deeply saddened, left them in frustration before Allah had given him permission to do so.

Yunus boarded a ship with other travelers, and in the middle of the sea they faced towering waves and great danger. The people on the ship decided to cast one of them into the water to lighten the load, so they drew lots, and it fell upon Yunus more than once, until he cast himself into the sea.

Allah sent a great fish that swallowed Yunus without harming him, by Allah's permission. Yunus found himself in three layers of darkness: the darkness of night, the darkness of the sea, and the darkness of the fish's belly. In that difficult moment, Yunus realized his mistake in leaving his people without his Lord's permission.

Yunus called upon his Lord sincerely and humbly, admitting his mistake and acknowledging that only Allah could save him. Allah answered his prayer and had mercy on him, commanding the fish to release him safely onto the shore.

Allah caused a shady plant to grow for Yunus to rest under after his great exhaustion, then commanded him to return to his people. He found that they had all come to believe in Allah after seeing signs of punishment drawing near, and Allah had mercy on them and accepted their repentance.

The story of Prophet Yunus teaches children that sincere repentance opens the doors of Allah's mercy no matter how deep the darkness, and that patience and waiting for Allah's permission in every matter are among the most important qualities of a believer.
