Once you hit week 36, most doctors recommend packing your hospital bag and keeping it ready by the door, since labor can start at any point from here on. Packing early gives you real peace of mind and saves you and your partner unnecessary scrambling in such an important moment.

What do you need?

  • ID documents, your medical file, test reports, and ultrasound results.
  • A front-opening nightgown for easier breastfeeding, plus a light robe for moving around the room.
  • Disposable-style underwear and large postpartum pads.
  • Personal care items: toothbrush, toothpaste, dry shampoo, lip balm, and a hair tie.
  • Your phone charger with a long cord, and a small pillow from home for comfort.
  • Loose, comfortable clothes to wear when you leave the hospital.

What does your baby need?

Even if the hospital provides some basics, it's best to bring your own small set for your baby: a few newborn outfits in different sizes (they might arrive bigger or smaller than expected), a light blanket, a small hat, and newborn-sized diapers. Don't forget the infant car seat — most hospitals won't let you leave with your baby without one properly installed and ready.

For your partner or companion, a small bag is enough: a change of clothes, some snacks, and their phone charger — the wait is often longer than they expect.

One last tip: keep the bag somewhere easy to grab, and let those around you know exactly where it is. Many mothers forget simple details in the rush to the hospital. Packing early isn't a luxury — it's a gift you're giving your exhausted future self in that big moment.
