Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi was born around 780, likely originating from the Khwarezm region in Central Asia, and lived and worked in Baghdad, capital of the Abbasid Caliphate. He worked at the «House of Wisdom» in Baghdad, the great scholarly institution founded by Caliph al-Ma'mun to translate and advance Greek, Indian, and Persian sciences.
Around 820 al-Khwarizmi authored his most famous work, «The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing» (al-Kitab al-Mukhtasar fi Hisab al-Jabr wal-Muqabala), presenting systematic solutions to linear and quadratic equations using the methods of «al-jabr» (transferring terms to remove negatives) and «al-muqabala» (canceling equal terms from both sides). This work was the first independent, systematic treatment of solving algebraic equations, and from it the term «algebra» derives in European languages.
Scientific Legacy
Al-Khwarizmi also authored an important work introducing Hindu-Arabic numerals and their arithmetic methods to the Islamic world, which then passed through Latin translations into Europe, where his Latinized name «Algoritmi» gave rise to the modern term «algorithm», used throughout computer science today. He also contributed to astronomy and geography, overseeing a project to map the known world of his time. He died around 850, leaving a legacy that forms one of the most important foundations of modern mathematics.
