Expected Milestones
Around age one, simple single words like «mama» or «dada». Between 18 months and two years, a growing vocabulary and the start of combining two words. By age three, short sentences of three or more words that strangers can usually understand.
How to Support Language Growth
Talk to your toddler throughout the day about everything you're doing, read to them daily even if they seem uninterested, and clearly name things around them. Avoid repeatedly correcting their pronunciation directly; instead, naturally reflect the correct word back within your own speech.
- Cut screen time and replace it with direct conversation — live interaction beats any educational video.
- Wait and give your toddler time to respond before finishing the sentence for them.
- Bilingual children may lag slightly in vocabulary in a single language, and that's completely normal.
