Abu al-'Abbas Muhammad ibn Yazid al-Mubarrad was born in Basra in 826 CE and studied grammar under its masters before moving to Baghdad, where his renown grew until he became the leading grammarian of the Basran school in his time.
Al-Mubarrad engaged in famous scholarly debates with his Kufan counterpart Tha'lab over grammatical questions, and authored 'al-Kamil fi al-Lugha wa'l-Adab', a sweeping compilation of literary texts and linguistic reports in an encyclopedic style.
Legacy
Several prominent linguists trained under al-Mubarrad, and his 'al-Kamil' remains among the most important sources of classical Arabic literature, alongside his other works on grammar and prosody that were studied for centuries.
