Ahmad ibn al-Husayn al-Bayhaqi was born in 384 AH (994 CE) in the village of Khusrawjird in the Bayhaq district of Khorasan. He began studying hadith at a young age, traveling to Nishapur, Mecca, Baghdad, Kufa, and other centers of learning to hear traditions from leading hadith masters, chief among them al-Hakim al-Naysaburi, whose methodology in compilation and referencing greatly influenced him.
Al-Bayhaqi was known for his exceptional precision in gathering, documenting, and critically evaluating hadith. He organized narrations systematically by legal topic, making his works especially useful for jurists seeking textual evidence — a method that distinguished his writing from much of the hadith literature of his time.
His Scholarly Legacy
His work Al-Sunan al-Kubra is among the most comprehensive hadith collections arranged by legal subject, alongside Shu'ab al-Iman and Dala'il al-Nubuwwah. Al-Bayhaqi died in Nishapur in 458 AH (1066 CE).
