There's no single «ideal» age for traveling with an infant, but the period after the first three months — once feeding and basic immunity have settled a bit — is often easier than the very early weeks.

Preparing Before the Trip

Book your infant their own seat on a long flight, and make sure your car seat is certified for travel. Pack more milk and meals than you'd normally need in case of delays, and keep a full change of clothes in your carry-on.

During the Trip

Feeding or offering a pacifier during takeoff and landing helps equalize ear pressure and reduces discomfort. Keep sleep timing as close to routine as possible, and let your baby move and stretch whenever you get a break.

  • Check the airline's policy on carrying milk and infant food before you fly.
  • Keep the baby bag in your carry-on rather than checked luggage, however short the trip.
  • Expect some sleep disruption in the first days of the trip — adjusting takes a little time.
  • Pack one bag for dirty items and one for clean ones — mess happens fast while traveling.
