A butterfly goes through four amazing stages in its life. The journey begins when a mother butterfly lays a tiny egg on a plant leaf. After a few days, the egg hatches into a small «caterpillar» (also called a larva).

The caterpillar eats plant leaves hungrily and grows quickly, until it builds itself a hard covering called a «chrysalis» (or pupa). Inside, it stays perfectly still while its body completely transforms.

Finally, a beautiful butterfly with colorful wings emerges from the chrysalis! It waits a little while for its wings to dry, then flies off to find flowers and lay new eggs, starting the cycle all over again.
