A «lake» is a body of water surrounded by land on all sides, unlike a sea, which connects to the ocean. Most lakes form when rainwater, melting snow, or rivers collect in a low area of land.
The «Great Lakes» of North America, between the United States and Canada, are one of the largest groups of freshwater lakes in the world — so large that in some parts you cannot see land on the other side.
There is also the «Caspian Sea», which is actually the largest lake in the world despite being called a «sea», located between several countries in Asia. Another famous lake is the «Dead Sea» between Jordan and Palestine, so salty that objects float on its surface with ease.
