Prepositions (حروف الجرّ) are short words that come before a noun to connect it to the rest of the sentence, helping us understand place, time, or reason. Common ones include: «في» (in), «على» (on), «من» (from), «إلى» (to), «مع» (with).
Example: «الكتاب في الحقيبة» (the book is in the bag) tells us where the book is. «ذهبتُ إلى المدرسة» (I went to school) tells us the destination. «القطة على الطاولة» (the cat is on the table) tells us exactly where the cat is.
An important rule: the noun that follows a preposition takes the «kasra» mark most of the time, like «في البيتِ». Knowing this helps us read the sentence correctly.
