Every Arabic sentence is made of words, and each word has a type that determines its role in the sentence. In this lesson we'll learn the three main word types in Arabic: the noun, the verb, and the particle.
Noun, Verb, and Particle
A noun is a word that names a person, animal, object, or place, such as boy, cat, book, or school. It can take the definite article "al" (the), as in "the boy" or "the book." A verb is a word that expresses an action happening at a certain time, such as wrote, writes, or write. "Wrote" shows something that happened in the past, "writes" shows something happening now or in the future, and "write" is a command.
A particle, on the other hand, has no meaning by itself, but it connects words and clarifies meaning, such as in, on, from, and to. When we say "the book is on the table," the word "on" is a particle linking the book and the table and showing its location.
Knowing a word's type helps a child build correct sentences, and it forms the foundation of all Arabic grammar. Once a child can tell nouns, verbs, and particles apart, they become better able to understand and analyze how sentences are put together.
