Uwais al-Qarani lived in Yemen during the time of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, yet he was never able to travel and meet him, because his mother was elderly and blind, with no one to care for her but him. He stayed devotedly by her side, feeding her, tending to her needs, content to remain near her even though it meant missing the chance to see the Prophet ﷺ in person.

Uwais owned almost nothing of this world, wearing such simple, worn clothing that people often overlooked him entirely. But his heart was full of sincere faith, and those who knew him described him as someone whose tongue was always occupied with remembrance of God — his poverty never distracted him from devotion, nor from caring for his aging mother.

The Prophet ﷺ once told his companions that a man from Yemen named Uwais would one day be met by some of the believers, calling him the best among the generation after the companions, and advising anyone who found him to ask him to pray for them — for his devotion to his mother had raised him to a rank with God that even meeting the Prophet ﷺ in person had not granted. His name endures as a lasting symbol for anyone who places their parents' care above all else in life.
