A simple farmer lived with his wife in a small cottage, and they owned an ordinary goose which they cared for every day.

One morning, the farmer was surprised to find a shiny egg in the goose's nest. When he examined it, he found it was made of pure gold! He and his wife were overjoyed and sold the egg for a great price.

Every day after that, the goose laid one golden egg, and the farmer slowly grew rich, and his life improved greatly.

But the farmer became greedy. He said to his wife, "Why wait for just one egg each day? There must be a huge treasure of gold inside the goose — let's kill her and take it all at once."

His wife agreed despite her hesitation, and they cut open the poor goose, but they found no gold inside her at all — just an ordinary goose like any other.

The farmer and his wife regretted it deeply, for they had lost their daily source of wealth because of their greed to get everything all at once.

The Lesson: Too much greed can cost us even the blessing we already have.
