In a faraway forest lived a powerful lion who forced all the animals to send him one creature every day to eat, so that he would not attack them all at once. Frightened, the animals gathered and agreed to take turns, hoping this would keep everyone safe.

One day, it was the turn of a small hare known among the animals for his cleverness. At first he was afraid, but he sat and thought carefully until he came up with a clever plan — and then walked to the lion slowly, arriving late on purpose.

The hungry lion roared angrily, 'Why are you late?' The hare answered politely, 'My lord, I was on my way to you, but another lion blocked my path and claimed that he was the true king of this forest!'

Furious, the lion demanded to see this rival at once. The hare led him to a deep well with clear water and pointed inside, saying, 'He is there, my lord.' The lion looked down, saw his own reflection, and believing it to be a rival, roared at it — the echo roared back. Enraged, the lion leapt into the well to fight his imagined enemy, and could not climb back out.

All the animals of the forest rejoiced, finally free from the lion's cruelty, and celebrated the little hare's clever plan that had saved them all. From that day on, the animals lived in peace, sharing food and water fairly, without fear.

This tale is one of the most beloved stories from the classic Arabic book Kalila wa Dimna, told to children to show that wisdom and courage can overcome unjust strength.

The Lesson: Wisdom and cleverness can overcome injustice and brute strength; even the smallest can protect others.
