Among the most beloved stories generations of Arab children have grown up with is the tale of the ant and the dove — a short, simple story that carries a deep meaning about gratitude and cooperation between creatures, however different their size and strength may be.

On a hot summer day, a small, busy ant went out searching for a drop of water to quench her thirst, and came to the bank of a small stream flowing quietly among the trees. She approached the water carefully to drink, but her foot suddenly slipped, and she fell into the stream. The current began to sweep her away as she struggled with all her tiny strength to swim.

A beautiful white dove sat on a branch of a nearby tree and saw the poor ant struggling in the water, about to drown. Her kind heart moved quickly — she plucked a large leaf with her beak and dropped it into the water beside the ant. The ant climbed onto the leaf with great effort and clung to it with all her strength, until the gentle current carried her safely to the shore.

The ant thanked the dove from the bottom of her heart and promised she would never forget this kindness, no matter how much time passed. The dove only smiled and said she had simply done what any kind heart would do, and that she had never expected thanks or anything in return.

A few days later, a hunter passed by that very same tree and spotted the beautiful dove sleeping on a high branch. He quietly took out his net and began creeping closer to catch her without her noticing. Just as he prepared to throw the net, the little ant happened to be passing by and saw the danger closing in on her friend the dove.

The ant did not hesitate for a single moment. She climbed quickly onto the hunter's foot and gave him a small but sudden bite. The man cried out in pain, and his hand jerked, causing the net to fall from his grip with a sudden noise. The dove startled awake at once and flew swiftly away to safety, just before the net could catch her.

The dove landed on a distant branch, breathless with joy at her escape, and realized that her small friend had returned the favor at exactly the right moment. From that day on, the dove and the ant became loyal friends who never forgot each other's kindness, and everyone who heard their story learned that good deeds, however small they may seem, are never wasted.

The Lesson: No good deed is ever too small to matter, and returning kindness is a duty, even when the favor seems simple to others.
