On Friday evening, Saleem wanted to watch an adventure movie, while his sister Salma wanted to watch an animated film she loved dearly. The two began arguing loudly, each saying, «My movie is better, we have to watch mine!», neither really listening to the other at all.

Their mother heard the argument from the kitchen, came in, and sat between them, saying, «Before you decide, tell me: why does each of you love your movie?». Saleem spoke first about his love of thrilling adventures, then Salma spoke about her love for the cheerful characters and beautiful colors. Each listened to the other’s reason for the very first time, without interrupting.

Their mother said, «Each of your opinions has a good reason behind it, and one of you doesn’t have to be wrong for the other to be right». She suggested they take turns choosing the movie each week, and Saleem and Salma agreed at once, with Saleem even suggesting they watch Salma’s movie that week since she was so excited about it.

The siblings enjoyed Salma’s movie that night more than they expected, because both watched it with an open heart instead of anger. They learned that listening to another’s opinion with respect doesn’t mean giving up your own, but opens a door to lovelier solutions neither of them could have reached alone.
