Muhammad ibn Jabir al-Battani was born around 858 in Harran near Urfa in the Levant, raised in a milieu known for its interest in the astronomical and mathematical traditions of the Sabians. He settled in the city of Raqqa on the Euphrates, where he built a private observatory and, beginning in 877, undertook decades of meticulous astronomical observation.
Al-Battani replaced the geometric methods Ptolemy had used in his astronomical calculations with more precise and efficient trigonometric methods, employing sine and tangent functions instead of geometric chords. He thereby corrected several of Ptolemy's astronomical values, calculating the length of the solar year far more accurately than before, along with the obliquity of the ecliptic and the precession of the equinoxes, with a precision that astonished astronomers of his era.
Scientific Legacy
Al-Battani authored his famous work «Kitab al-Zij al-Sabi'», compiling his observations and astronomical tables, which was translated into Latin in the twelfth century as De Motu Stellarum and became an essential reference for European astronomers until the Renaissance, cited by Copernicus, Tycho Brahe, and Kepler in their own works. Al-Battani died in 929 near Samarra, Iraq.
