Abdullah ibn Muslim ibn Qutaybah was born in Kufa in 828 CE and grew up in Baghdad, studying language, grammar, jurisprudence, and hadith, and later served as a judge in Dinawar, from which his nisba derives.
Ibn Qutaybah combined linguistic, literary, and intellectual writing, authoring 'Uyun al-Akhbar' and 'Adab al-Katib', two comprehensive literary encyclopedias, and also wrote in defense of the traditionist method against its rivals among the theologians and philosophers.
Legacy
Ibn Qutaybah stood out for his prolific and wide-ranging output spanning language, history, jurisprudence, and the interpretation of difficult Qur'anic and hadith passages. His works remained essential sources studied by both literary scholars and jurists for centuries.
