Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Sakhawi was born in 831 AH/1428 CE in Cairo. He studied closely with Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani for about fourteen years, becoming his foremost student and the primary transmitter of his hadith scholarship, while also studying under numerous other scholars in Egypt, the Hijaz, and Syria.
Al-Sakhawi excelled in history, narrator criticism, and hadith sciences. His monumental biographical encyclopedia «al-Daw' al-Lami' li-Ahl al-Qarn al-Tasi'» profiles thousands of scholars and notable figures of his era, making it one of the most important sources for the history of the late Mamluk period. He also authored «Fath al-Mughith bi-Sharh Alfiyyat al-Hadith», a commentary on al-Iraqi's didactic poem on hadith methodology, and «al-I'lan bi'l-Tawbikh», a spirited defense of the discipline of history.
His Legacy
Al-Sakhawi moved to Medina late in life, where he died in 902 AH/1497 CE, leaving a vast scholarly legacy that remains an essential reference for historians studying the scholars of the ninth century AH.
