Abu Rayhan Muhammad al-Biruni was born in 362 AH (973 CE) in Kath, the capital of the Khwarezm region, growing up in a scholarly environment that fostered his early interest in astronomy and mathematics. He moved between the courts of rulers in Khwarezm, Jurjan, and Ghazni, where patronage allowed him to devote himself to research and writing across many fields.
Al-Biruni accompanied Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni on his campaigns into India, mastering Sanskrit and undertaking a deep study of Indian philosophy, religion, and science that produced his famous book Tahqiq ma li'l-Hind (Verifying All That Pertains to India) — one of the earliest works to study another civilization with an objective, systematic approach free of bias. He is also renowned for his remarkably precise calculation of the Earth's circumference and radius using innovative trigonometric methods.
His Scholarly Legacy
Al-Biruni authored roughly 140 works spanning astronomy, mathematics, geography, pharmacology, and comparative religion, most notably Al-Qanun al-Mas'udi on astronomy and Al-Athar al-Baqiyah on chronology and ancient calendars. He died in Ghazni in 440 AH (1048 CE).
