Division is the operation we use to share a group of things equally among a number of people or groups. Its symbol is (÷).
Example: we have 12 candies to share equally among 4 friends. We write: 12 ÷ 4 = 3, meaning each friend gets 3 candies. Another example: 20 apples shared equally into 5 boxes: 20 ÷ 5 = 4 apples per box.
Division is the opposite of multiplication: if we know 4 × 3 = 12, we immediately know 12 ÷ 4 = 3 and 12 ÷ 3 = 4. Remember that division is best learned first with real objects before moving to numbers alone.
