Draw a grid of squares numbered 1 to 8 or 10 with chalk on the pavement or garden floor, in the traditional hopscotch layout (one square, then two side by side, alternating). Have your child hop on one foot through the single squares, and land on both feet in the double squares.

Start slowly and let them hold your hand for balance if needed, then encourage hopping solo as their balance improves. Later, turn it into a challenge by tossing a small stone onto a square that must then be hopped over.

This classic outdoor activity builds physical balance and leg strength, and develops motor coordination and number recognition in an active, enjoyable way.
