High heat breaks the natural bonds inside each strand, and this damage builds up with repeated use until it shows as breakage, dryness, and lost shine. The good news is that you can still enjoy heat styling with a few simple precautions.

Never skip heat protectant

Apply a heat-protectant spray or serum before any styling tool, without exception — it forms a layer that reduces direct damage to the strand, even if your hair seems fine the first time you skip it.

Set the right temperature

  • Fine or damaged hair: stay under 150°C.
  • Normal hair: 150–180°C is usually enough.
  • Thick or resistant hair: up to 200°C, but only when truly needed.

Habits that reduce cumulative damage

Reduce how many times you pass the iron over the same section, since repeated passes cause more damage than the temperature itself. Partially air-dry your hair before blow-drying to reduce heat exposure time, and set aside a day or two a week with no heat tools at all to give your hair a break.
