A small group of scouts set out on a hike through the nearby hills with their leader, Umm Abeer. Young Rawan was in charge of carrying the compass, but partway through the trail she noticed it had slipped from her pocket without her realizing.

Rawan felt a flicker of worry, but she remembered her leader's lesson about reading the sun. “The sun rises in the east and sets in the west,” she told herself confidently, “and I can use my shadow to find direction.” She stood in an open spot and carefully watched the way her shadow fell.

Rawan planted a small stick in the ground and placed a stone at the tip of its shadow, then waited a bit and placed another stone at the shadow's new tip to determine east and west precisely, exactly as she'd learned in scout meetings.

Thanks to her careful observation, Rawan was able to guide her group safely back to camp before sunset. Leader Umm Abeer praised her in front of everyone, and Rawan felt immense pride at having turned a worrying moment into a chance to learn a new skill.
