On Monday, Huda opened her bag at recess to eat the sandwich her mother had made her, when she noticed her classmate Mariam sitting alone with no food. Huda asked her, Why aren't you eating?
Mariam said sadly, I forgot my lunch bag at home today. Huda felt sorry for her, looked at her delicious sandwich, and thought for a moment: should she give half of it away, or eat it all herself?
Huda remembered how hungry she felt whenever she had nothing to eat, so she split the sandwich in half, gave Mariam the bigger piece, and said with a smile, Here, let's eat together.
The two girls sat eating and laughing together, and Huda felt a strange kind of joy she had never felt before, a joy that came not from the food, but from sharing it with her friend.
The next day, Huda's mother packed two sandwiches instead of one. Huda said happily, Mom, today I'll share my lunch with Mariam again, because I learned that food tastes better when we share it with others.
The Lesson: Sharing what we have with others makes joy bigger and strengthens friendship.
