Abu Zayd al-Hilali stands among the most famous heroes of the Hilali Epic, an old Arab folk saga recounting the journey of the Banu Hilal tribe from Najd toward North Africa. Abu Zayd was born with darker skin than his brothers, causing some in his tribe to doubt his lineage in his youth, even though he was truly the son of their prince — leaving him with a difficult childhood full of questions about who he was.

Abu Zayd never gave in to this doubt. He grew up determined to prove himself through his actions rather than his words, training relentlessly in horsemanship and combat until he became the finest knight in his entire tribe, known for his rare courage, his wisdom in difficult moments, and his great generosity, which made him beloved wherever he went.

When the Banu Hilal tribe decided to journey toward new, more fertile lands, Abu Zayd became one of the leading figures of that long expedition, protecting the tribe from danger and leading his fellow riders with remarkable wisdom and courage. His name became a lasting symbol of authentic Arab chivalry, passed down through generations in folk tales and evening gatherings to this very day.
