Estimation means guessing the number or amount of things roughly, without counting one by one, relying on experience and observation. It's an important skill we use often in daily life.
To estimate well, we use a “reference point”: for example, if we know one handful of chickpeas is about 20 pieces, we can estimate that a bowl holding four handfuls has about 80 pieces.
After estimating, it's fun to check accuracy by actually counting. It's perfectly fine if the estimate isn't exact — the goal is getting close to the real number and building a child's sense of numbers and quantities, not landing on the exact figure.
