سبب التسمية
The name likely derives from its location to the «east» (sharq) relative to older Gulf trading ports, or from an Arabic root meaning «to shine» or «rise» — as of the sun.
أهم المعلومات
Named UNESCO Cultural Capital of the Arab World in 1998
Designated World Book Capital in 2019
The only UAE emirate that fully bans alcohol sales
Home to more than twenty specialised museums
UNESCO named Sharjah the «Cultural Capital of the Arab World» in 1998 in recognition of its heritage and arts programmes, and later crowned it «World Book Capital» in 2019. It is the only emirate in the UAE that fully prohibits the sale of alcohol.
The emirate restored its waterfront Heritage Area with traditional coral-and-mud buildings, and today runs a dense network of specialised museums covering archaeology, Islamic art, science and maritime history — making it a leading cultural destination in the Gulf.
