أهم المعلومات
Founded by Bani Utub migrants from the Najd in the early 1700s
Historically prospered as a pearling and trading port
The iconic Kuwait Towers were completed in 1979
Souq Al-Mubarakiya is among the city's oldest markets
Kuwait City was founded in the early 18th century when Bani Utub tribes migrating from the Najd settled by a small bay and built a modest fort, or «kut», from which the city takes its name. It quickly grew into a thriving port for pearl diving and the dhow trade.
The three Kuwait Towers, built in 1979 as ornamented water reservoirs, symbolise the modern city, while the historic Souq Al-Mubarakiya in the city centre still preserves the atmosphere of traditional Gulf marketplaces with its narrow lanes and stalls.
