Gather a few objects that make distinct sounds: a small bell, crinkling paper, jingling keys, a spoon tapped on a cup, water poured from a pitcher. Have your child close their eyes or sit with their back to you, then make one of the sounds and ask them to guess its source.

Start with familiar, clearly different sounds, then gradually move to more similar ones to raise the challenge. You can also swap roles and let your child make the sounds while you guess — this gives them a fun sense of being in charge.

This activity trains auditory attention and sound discrimination, a foundational skill that later supports learning to read and telling letter sounds apart, while also boosting auditory memory and focus.
