Playdough is a wonderful tool for hands-on learning that isn’t limited to paper and pencil. Show your child a card with one large, clear number, and ask them to shape that same number by rolling a piece of dough with their fingers.

  • Start with numbers made of simple lines, like 1 and 7, before curved ones like 3 and 8.
  • Leave the card in front of them as a visual reference throughout the activity.
  • Gently guide their hand movements at first without shaping the number for them.
  • After shaping each number, have them count out small dough pieces matching that number.

This activity strengthens your child’s fine finger muscles (a foundational pre-writing skill), and gives them a hands-on, three-dimensional way to understand each number’s shape, quite different from flat drawing on paper.
