This activity is great for children still hesitant with a pencil, building confidence before actual writing begins.

Before your child can hold a pencil with confidence, they need to recognize a letter's shape and the hand movement needed to draw it — that's where this fun sensory activity comes in. Spread a thin layer of fine sand, flour, or sugar in a shallow tray, draw a large letter with your finger, and ask your child to trace it with theirs.

Start with easy letters that have simple lines, then gradually move to more complex ones. Repeat the letter's name and sound while tracing to reinforce the link between shape and sound.

Prepare a shallow tray with a thin layer of sand or flour.

Draw a large, clear letter in the middle of the tray.

Have your child trace the letter with a finger while saying its name aloud.

Gently erase it and ask them to draw it again from memory.

Repeat with 3 to 4 new letters per session without tiring your child.
