For younger children (3-4 years), before using a real rope, practice jumping in place with both feet together several times in a row — this builds the muscles and balance needed. For older children (5-6 years), get a rope sized to their height and have them swing it overhead, jumping as it reaches the ground.

You can start by laying the rope flat on the ground and having your child hop back and forth over it, then progress to slowly swinging it under their feet while standing still, and finally attempting a full turn. Plenty of stumbling is normal at first — this skill needs real hand-foot coordination.

This activity builds cardiovascular fitness and muscle strength, develops balance and fine motor timing, and gives your child a real sense of accomplishment with every successful jump.
